PLUTO
Vitamins ruled by Pluto: Orotic acid (vitamin B-13).
KEYWORD: Transformation (chrysalis to butterfly)
I have a confession to make. I’;m a Plutonian. It takes one to know one. I’;ve seen a lot of things written about Pluto, but few Plutonians coming forward to call it like it is. Below is how it is from my Mars conjunct Pluto in Leo which resides in the 12th house. I can see the raised eyebrows now….That said, let’;s look at Pluto at its dirtiest and at its finest. For, no other planets has such extremes as Pluto.
THE SYMBOL OF PLUTO
If one looks at the symbol for Pluto, it is the Cross of Matter with a half moon and the sphere of Spirit hovering unattached in the ‘;bowl’; created by the Moon. Interpreted at a more mundane level, it is about rising through the many crosses of life, the challenges, the events, the things that make us strong and rising through them and becoming “open” to pure spirit. How do we open? The answer is contained in the Moon–through our emotions. It is about the integration of our emotions that bring us good health, that help us evolve from the lowliest life form to the ethers of Spirit. That is the promise of Pluto. Getting there, though, is a whole ‘;nother ball game as they say! It ain’;t easy. It ain’;t for the faint of heart. Anyone with a strong, highly aspected Pluto in their chart is in for extremes this life time. The only question is: how will they handle these formidable roller coaster extremes? Therein lies the heart of their health. Let’;s look at Pluto more closely in terms of our health.
PLUTO AND MEDICAL ASTROLOGY
Pluto rules life and death. It reflects a transformation of cells–a continual proliferation and regeneration or the complete halt of all activity, thus inducing death. On a positive level Pluto helps insure vital and basic changes in metabolism and genetics as well as continued, unbroken chemical processes that eventually transmute and make us functioning and healthy human bodies.
In negative terms Pluto can result in a lack of communication at the very basic levels of many diverse metabolic, enzymic and genetic functions. Hence diseases of a deteriorative nature that we could interpret as complete transformations of our bodies could occur. That is, depending upon the aspects between Pluto and other planets, we could go from strong to weak, from healthy bodies to deformed bodies, from coordination to a lack of coordination, from healthy red blood cells to abnormal-sized red blood cells or from normal white blood cell count to abnormal white blood cell count under Pluto’;s influence.
The planet is also concerned with the most minute, subatomic particles and how they fit into the schematic of our bodily functions. It affects the molecules, their relationships to a larger molecular structure, their eventual catalytic change into carbohydrates, lipids, proteins or nucleic acids and their eventual formation into more complex chains that all are related to our most basic bodily functions.
Pluto also rules enzyme production as well as the size and shape of red and white blood cells, the bases of our health concerns: a sick cell spells trouble in a big way sooner or later, usually later. Pluto’;s most important function, though, is rulership of the endocrine system. Without the glands functioning well with one another the rest of the body is going to feel out of sorts. A strongly aspected (3 or more hard aspects such as a conjunction, square, inconjunct or opposition) Pluto or one near the Ascendant or Midheaven can indicate potential endocrine-related ailments. We then need to look for which gland is malfunctioning. For example, if Pluto is found in Aries, the pineal gland may be affected; in Taurus, the thyroid; in Cancer, the posterior pituitary gland; in Virgo, the pancreas and/or spleen; in Scorpio/Cancer, the testes or ovaries; in Capricorn, the anterior pituitary gland and in Pisces, the lymph gland system.
Finally, Pluto rules the subconscious depths of our minds. If we persist in keeping a lot of negative emotional reactions hidden in our subconscious minds, sooner or later they will fester and alter our physical health in much the same way an afflicted Moon will.
THE LIGHT AND SHADOW SIDES OF PLUTO
From a health perspective, Plutonian people (they are defined as having Pluto conjunct within a ten degree orb of the Ascendant or Midheaven, or a conjunction with another planet) can get into health problems due to repressions or suppressed issues. No one can bury a traumatic reaction deeper than Pluto–bar none. Not even Scorpio can hold a candle to Pluto’;s force, intensity and ability to go into denial.
Pluto people are faced with issues involving power this lifetime. I am talking about RAW power. This is different from power that has been honed, smoothed, boundaried and has morals and values to it. A wild mustang is one symbol of primal Plutonian survival power. A nuclear power plant is a harnessed variety. An atomic bomb going exploding is raw, unbridled and destructive Plutonian power. There is brute power. Abuse of power. Power OVER someone. There is Empowerment of the self or of others. And there are power struggles. And then, there’;s political power….spinmiester’;s personified. The word megalomaniac suits a Pluto gone negative in its Shadow side.
Plutonians will more than get their opportunity to deal with power issues for themselves and perhaps, for others. On the negative side, they are Power Mongers. On the positive side, Power Managers of themselves as well as of others and situations they face. A person with three or more hard aspects to their Pluto will be placed into positions of power and chances are, they will abuse it. That is how we learn–by making mistakes. That is a part of our natural soul learning curve. We all go through it. We were all Plutonians at one time or another. Pluto, when it makes a mistake, it is a whopper of global proportion and it will affect many people very deeply. It is nothing, rhetorically speaking, to sneeze at.
A person with soft aspects (sextiles and trines) to their Pluto have learned about the shadow issues of power and will not go through the Herculean struggles that a hard aspected Pluto will necessarily have to traverse in learning and understanding the shadow side of power and how it can corrupt and destroy the self and others. Pluto puts their owners through a torturous gauntlet that has no rival. Another aspect of the use and abuse of power is manipulation. No one is better at this than Pluto. There is no question Pluto will manipulate. More, the question that should be asked are: Do they know they’;re manipulating? Is it conscious? Unconscious? The more evolved Plutonian knows they are doing it, understands the tenets of manipulation and utilizes it for the EMpowerment of others rather than for selfish, personal or survival use for themselves.
SURVIVAL AT ALL COSTS
The underpinning of health for Pluto is based upon primal survival instincts. No one is more primal, more survival oriented, than Pluto. That is why when they feel threatened, they can bring a tremendous amount of focus, energy, concentration and WILLpower to bear on making sure they live and don’;t die in the process. If you saw the movie picture, TITANIC, the main villain of the story, was very Plutonian in every respect–the shadow side–and he was bound and determine to survive the ship sinking. He did not care at all about anyone else being saved. Plus, he showed the revenge earmark that is well known for a shadow Pluto person, as well.
If, by now, you sense that Pluto is a nuclear bomb just waiting to go off, you’;re right. The only question will be in what direction (positive or negative?) and when. If this incredible atomic energy, which is ours for this lifetime to work with, is evolved, a Plutonian can move mountains on a global framework. They take this energy and focus it just like a laser. A Plutonian can outlast anything and anyone. They can shoulder loads and responsibilities that Saturn wouldn’;t even think of taking on, much less carrying. Given this gift of nuclear energy, much like Prometheus gave fire to humans from the Greek myths, Plutonians can transform whatever they touch, whatever interests them and whatever moves their heart.
PLUTO AND MAGICIANS AND ALCHEMISTS
They are the true magicians in the making in human form. They are the sorcerer’;s apprentice from the Walt Disney movie where Mickey Mouse ‘;played’; with all the sorcerer’;s gadgets while he was gone. They are here to learn how to manage raw, primal energy, focus it THROUGH themselves and then use it for the good of all. It takes lifetimes to do this. Once you’;ve seen an evolved Plutonian at work, there is no question that s/he is physically manifesting what s/he desires. Think it, want it, and it is so.
PLUTO’;S ENEMIES: WHY WOULD YOU HAVE ONE FOR A FRIEND?
On another level, they are the master spies, the ones who can manage the art of espionage or be the “mole” who brings down the entire corporation or government. They have the wily cunning, the instinctual abilities, that powerful sense of survival at all costs, to outlast all their enemies. In fact, Pluto will have enemies–that is a promise. The smart, seasoned Pluto doesn’;t do a thing. Why? Because this Plutonian knows that the Cosmos will take care of anyone who attacks them without ever lifting a finger. Such is their belief in strong sense of right or wrong in their lives. Many Plutonians see things as black or white, never gray. They are the right people to have if the world falls to hell in a hand basket. You will want this person at your back, should you be attacked, for no one will protect you more fiercely or better, than a Plutonian.
Conversely, no one is more ruthless or single-minded about revenge, either, if they are not evolved in these matters. Like a bulldozer out of control, nothing can stop a Plutonian or a Plutonian event from occurring. That is why epidemics are ruled by Pluto; and the Spanish Flu, which swept the world in 1918 and killed 22 million people worldwide in six months time, is the perfect example of Pluto massively transforming on a global level. You don’;t mess with Pluto. You can sort of look at it like a rattlesnake that is sleeping–you don’;t disturb it or you pay the price accordingly.
Plutonians within the astrological world, unfortunately, have a bad reputation. Granted, some of them have earned it, but many have not. Few either see or acknowledge the higher, more evolved Plutonians who are quietly out there literally changing the shape of our present and manipulating the future for our benefit. You will find Plutonians in all walks of life shouldering the heavy loads and taking the brutal beatings of Life. In their heart, they know, alone, that what they do is just and right and noble. That is the higher, evolved energy of Pluto. And even these Plutonians can get ill, also.
HEALTH ISSUES
If this positive, evolved type of Plutonian gets ill, it is for only a short time. Yes, they will “dive” to the bottom of their respective barrel when they get sick and it gets downright ugly. However, their Vital Force, their constitution is such that they will bounce back even more strong and healthy than before. It is the dark side of this, the unintegrated Shadow side of Pluto, however, that catches all of us who have lessons in Power this lifetime, with our proverbial pants down. Where ever Pluto sits in the zodiac sign in your chart, this is where your Shadow issues are at and also, where your healing and your answers lie, simultaneously. This is the area you must transcend and transform. To do it, it means going to the bottom of our respective ‘;barrels’; which I refer to as the Dark Night of the Soul walk that we must take.
Pluto folks, when they go down with a health problem, don’;t get just a ‘;touch’; of flu or a ‘;touch’; of a cold. They get the whole dis-ease and then some. And they may fool you, too. Pluto will tell you of the near death experience(s) they have had. Or the time they almost died in a horrendous car wreck. Or participating in some extremist athletic event, such as sky diving, bungee jumping or dropping out of a helicopter to ski off the top of the mountain and they had a violent accident that they nearly died from or laid them up for six months to a year afterward. Plutonians do not have simple, straight forward, easy-to-fix accidents or illnesses. When they go down, they go down deeper, farther, longer, than any other planet insofar as recuperative time goes.
When a Plutonian breaks bone, they don’;t break a finger; they break their back. They don’;t have a chest cold, it goes immediately into double pneumonia. It isn’;t a first degree burn, it is fifty percent of their body and it’;s a third degree burn, instead. They don’;t get a slight headache, they get a migraine that puts them down and out for three days at a time. It is the EXTREMIST energy of Pluto gone awry that we see as it pulverizes and punishes our physical body to superhuman limits of being able to take it, heal and come back from such trauma.
Yet, even when laid up in traction for six months, or forced to be immobile or quiet or unmoving, this is what Pluto sometimes needs in order to think, feel and sort things out. Why? Why go such extremes to get their attention? Because no one is more repressed and suppressed than Pluto. They can bury their own personal hurt, anger, jealousy, shame, low self esteem, humiliation, rage, envy and every other negative human by sheer will alone. No one buries it deeper than Pluto. They will often say unconsciously, “Oh, I don’;t have any problems. I’;ve buried them so deep the sun will never shine on them.” Right. Well, for a while, maybe, but eventually, garbage that is fermenting and rotting in one’;s subconscious will come to ‘;light’; (physical manifestation) and with Pluto, it is always later.
If Pluto get a dis-ease, it is usually in their forties. Or, it is after a series of Job-from-the-Bible (Job went through many, many trials as he was tested by God–he lost his business, he lost his wife, and he lost members of his family, one after the another and yet, Job kept his faith) type of events where horrendous misfortune, one disaster befalling the next, has occurred and chipped away at Plutonian strength until the person breaks. Plutonians, by the way, have no bend or flexibility in them. At all. They are like mighty oak trees who can withstand more than a mere human being. When they break, they snap. And there’;s no putting them back together again exactly the same as they were before.
Pluto dis-eases may involved cancer, HIV, AIDS, or any other disease where transformation (utter) will take place when it is taken on by the person involved. It rules over tumors, along with Jupiter. And they can be either benign or malignant. Pluto is about rapid, mass cell proliferation and tumors and metastasized cancer is certainly all of that. Pluto dis-eases are really about suppression/repression of dark, deep emotions and trauma that have never seen the light of day of our consciousness. If we can address them, then we need not take on a dis-ease as a way to get to them and address them. After all, when one takes on a slowly debilitating disease that wants to transform you from human flesh to dust, you have a lot more time on your hands to think and feel than before getting ill. This is Pluto’;s way of getting you undivided, TOTAL attention to the problems that have been festering decades within you like a nuclear time bomb ticking down ready to explode. Except, the explosion was a physical manifestation of a dis-ease.
Pluto doesn’;t work on just physical dis-eases; it can transform our minds, too. Alzheimer’;s, Mad Cow disease, prion-types of dis-eases, are some examples of this cellular degeneration, neural disruption and destruction that belongs to Pluto’;s realm as well. It can be implicated in psychosis and schizophrenia as well. There is no escaping from Greek mythology that Pluto was the ruler of Hell. And when a person undergoes a “mental breakdown” we are looking at a Pluto phenomena. The do not bend; they break. Sometimes we have to break in order to have a breakthrough; so even mental disruption can have positive outcomes.
PLUTO, OUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM AND OUR ENERGY SYSTEM CHAKRAS
The major realm of Pluto is our endocrine system and I can’;t say enough about this. A book could be written on it, instead of just an article. When one realizes that our energy system, which is our aura, and part of our Vital Force in homeopathy terminology, is ruled by Pluto, and that the chakra system in the etheric body (the first invisible body around our physical form), you can begin to understand and appreciate just how much INFLUENCE Pluto really exerts on all of us all the time.
With each major chakra, is an endocrine gland. We can tell, as medical astrologers, which, if any, of your endocrine glands is malfunctioning. If it is not working correctly, THAT is where a health problem is brewing. It is then, only a question of when it will manifest. Here are the individual endocrine glands and Pluto’;s influence. I’;m going to put the opposite, polarity zodiac sign in parenthesis because often, in medical astrology, you will find the answers or the problems in the opposite sign that Pluto is in, and not the one at birth.
Pluto in Aries (Libra): Adrenals–solar plexus chakra
Pluto in Taurus (Scorpio): Thyroid–throat chakra
Pluto in Cancer (Capricorn): Pituitary (secondary influence in women with the Ovaries)–crown (head) chakra
Pluto in Leo (Aquarius): Thymus–heart chakra
Pluto in Virgo (Pisces): Pancreas–solar plexus/navel chakra (some experts contend the Pancreas is the spleen chakra vs. navel chakra. Others say it is the solar plexus. From a strict anatomical standpoint, the pancreas sits ABOVE the stomach, and the stomach is the solar plexus region. The pancreas and spleen are very close to one another anatomically speaking, both left of the midline of the body and upper right side of the torso; hence vicinity making this more confusion as to which chakra the Pancreas belongs to. My own sense is solar plexus).
Pluto in Scorpio (Taurus): Testes/Ovaries–root chakra (for women, because their ovaries/uterus are in their abdomen, the navel chakra. For men, because all their sexual organs are not in their abdomen, but lower, it is the root chakra. However, despite gender/location of sexual organs, there is still a root chakra influence for women, as well).
Pluto in Capricorn (Cancer): Parathyroid–throat chakra
Pluto in Pisces (Virgo): Pineal–brow chakra
The endocrine glands also have a dual rulership with the planets as well:
Adrenals: Mars
Thyroid: Mercury
Thymus: Neptune
Pancreas: Venus and Virgo
Pituitary: Capricorn (anterior) and Cancer (posterior) (I have not assigned planets to this gland).
Ovaries: Moon/Cancer and Pluto/Scorpio
Testes: Pluto
Parathyroid: Saturn
Pineal: Neptune
DO YOU HAVE A DYSFUNCTIONAL ENDOCRINE GLAND?
There are several ‘;rules’; to find out if you do or not. First of all, the biggest indicator of potential endocrine malfunction of a particular gland is:
1. Pluto conjunct the Midheaven/10th house cusp.
2. Pluto conjunct the Ascendant/1st house cusp.
Orb of influence: 10 degrees.
3. Three hard aspects to your Pluto. Hard aspects are a conjunction, square, inconjunct and opposition).
HOW CAN I TELL WHICH ENDOCRINE GLAND MAY BE HAVING PROBLEMS?
The easiest way is to know what the symptoms of a hyper (too fast) or hypo (too slow) gland. In my book, MEDICAL ASTROLOGY (which can be ordered online at:) I go into this information in-depth. This article is long enough without getting into the details of gland dysfunction.
You can usually begin to ‘;track down’; the culprit gland by noting that your Pluto is highly aspected, as noted earlier in this article. The next step is to look at which planet Pluto is aspecting. Another place to look is at each, particular planet noted above. The rule of thumb is then: the planet that has the most hard aspects to it, that rules over an endocrine gland, is most likely the culprit.
Let me give you an example using my chart. I have Mercury in Taurus. Mercury rules the thyroid gland. Taurus rules the neck region, including where the thyroid sits. I have the following aspects to Mercury 24 Taurus:
1. Mercury conjunct the MC
2. Mercury sextile Saturn
3. Mercury inconjunct Jupiter
NEXT: I have a Mars conjunct my Pluto, which highlights the possibility of gland malfunction. Mars rules the adrenal glands. The aspects to Mars 15 Libra are:
1. Mars conjunct Pluto
2. Mars sextile Uranus
3. Mars sextile Jupiter
4. Mars inconjunct Moon
By the fact I’;ve got a conjunction with Pluto underscores potential endocrine dysfunction. Let’;s look at aspects to my Pluto 9 Leo:
1. Mars conjunct Pluto
2. Pluto inconjunct Moon
3. Pluto sextile Sun
4. Pluto sextile Neptune
5. Pluto sextile Jupiter
6. Pluto sextile Uranus
Of these three planets, we can say there is potential “activity” with endocrine dysfunction because Pluto is so highly aspected and ‘;busy’; in my natal chart. The question is: which endocrine gland? The easy way to figure out the bottom-line culprit is to ask yourself the following question: Which planet has the MOST hard aspects (regardless of how many soft aspects)?
1. Mercury has 2
2. Mars has 2
3. Pluto has 2
The next question is to ask: which is the most elevated in the chart? The answer is: Mercury. Planets conjunct the Midheaven or the Ascendant are considered ‘;elevated’; although a planet on the Midheaven (MC) is considered the MOST elevated. Pluto is not elevated, nor is Mars. But Mercury is, so it would be your number one suspect. What you would do, as a medical astrologer then, is to ask your client questions about a hyper and hypo thyroid to see if they have ever had such symptoms. If they have in the past or if they have them presently, then you would counsel them to go to their doctor and have the appropriate tests undertaken to verify it one way or another.
In my medical history, in the late Sixties when I was dumb as a board about alternative medicine, my thyroid went “hyper” (too fast) and I began to get shaky, nervous, sweaty and horrendous heart palpitations that made me think I was going to have a heart attack. At the same time (another REALLY dumb thing) I had been on birth control pills for 2 years. After the findings came in that I had a hyperthyroid I asked the doctor if my thyroid problem could be due to the birth control pills. He said yes. I was off of them in an instant and never took them again. However, the damage was done. I went in for the “atomic cocktail” (drinking radium in water) and the poisonous, killing radium settled first in my thyroid and killed about half of it off. Voila! End of hyperthyroid problem. Since then, I have been on thyroid supplementation. This particular little medical crisis is what got me into alternative medicine. I was so mad (Mars/Pluto) at the prescription drugs/pharmacies who were manufacturing birth control pills that I thought–never again will I allow a doctor or drug control me without me educating myself about it first. In the long run, it was the single catalytic event which got me into holistic medicine.
The adrenal glands became a problem when I joined the volunteer fire department in 1980-1981 and began to make ‘;runs’; on fire calls–almost one a day, and sometimes, two or three times a day because I worked at home–so I caught the day AND night calls. At the end of the first six months, I was exhausted. Only, I wasn’;t just tired. I finally tracked down that I had adrenal exhaustion. The adrenals can make only so many/much of their hormones, the ‘;fight or flight’; kinds, and I’;d been on a nonstop six-month merry-go-round of adrenaline-pumping fire calls. They were exhausted and so was I. This time, I read up on what could naturally ‘;feed’; the adrenals: Vitamin C and Pantothenic Acid. I took these two vitamins, daily, for thirty days. Within 48-72 hours of taking them, however, I could feel a marked improvement in my lethargy. This time, I didn’;t allow the medical drugs to interfere and I healed myself up ‘;naturally.’;
The natal ‘;promise’; in my chart for endocrine problems is clearly there. Whether it manifests depends up on the choice I made/make. I could go into adrenal insufficiency again if I didn’;t know the signs/symptoms of it and then start taking my Vitamin C and Pantothenic Acid for a week to stop it. There’;s nothing I can do about the thyroid. Dead is dead. I’;ll be on supplementation the rest of my life. Such are the facts of life.
DEALING POSITIVELY WITH PLUTO IN A HEALTH SITUATION
Once Pluto has ‘;given’; you a dis-ease (understanding we attract it in the first place–the planet doesn’;t really give it to us), then you need to look at tools that will “dig where the sun doesn’;t shine” because of your ability to be in such deep, eternal denial about an event or series of events that took place in your life. My romance novel I wrote, WHITE WOLF (Silhouette Special Edition, November ‘;97, Lindsay McKenna) is about a Plutonian hero who has a very rough child hood. And what does he do? He suppresses it completely and uses his anger and desire (all emotions you notice….a Pluto specialty) to “bury” his past/poor beginnings and to become a corporate billionaire who raids companies and destroys everything ruthlessly in his path (this is called projection–he never could own his own anger, hurt, betrayal, and abandonment, so he projects it all out in the outer world and does it to other people over and over again).
Pluto ‘;projections’; are particularly virulent and poisonous–not only to the Plutonian who owns them, but to the people who live with this individual. This is why therapy is a very necessary “tool” in the Pluto fix-it box if they really want to get back to health. They must understand why they project out as ruthlessly, violently, with deadly intent, with leashed/unleashed rage as they do. Nothing is more deadly than a Pluto gone awry. You will often see an abuser with a strong Pluto in his/her natal chart (Saturn is the other type of abuser, and so is Mars). Each of these planets is a signature of an abuser. But to become an abuser, one must have been abused. The Pluto abuser has had the most devastating type of childhood to set them on this projection path of abusing all others. This is where the sociopath is born. Think of your gang-bangers who have no laws but their own laws–they do not heed the morals/values that most of us live our lives by….this is sociopathic behavior.
In one particular chart of a woman, she has a Moon, Saturn and Pluto conjunction in Leo. Her father attempted to kill her as a teenager, and she barely escaped with her life. She was constantly abused mentally, emotionally and physically, as well from the time she became a teenager and left home at age eighteen. She turned to drugs, married a man like her father, who continued to abuse her. She was never able to turn her life around, and sank deeper and deeper into drugs and eventually, psychosis. She is also sociopathic by nature and no longer knows ‘;right’; from ‘;wrong’; and makes up her own rules for how she survives (Pluto) in this world. Saturn is the father in this powerful stellium. The Moon represents her own fragile emotions that took a brutal beating until she finally ‘;broke’; and reordered her life so that she could survive it any way she could. Unless a miracle occurs, therapy nor any other healing tool has not helped this individual. Such is the devastating power of Pluto gone awry.
Therapy is one of the main tools to dig/delve into a Plutonian–if he or she will allow you that privilege. The trust bond between the therapist and the Plutonian must be there or the Plutonian is not going to allow anyone entrance into their vulnerable interior world of chaotic emotions and thoughts.
Breathing techniques, yoga, rebirthing techniques and soul recovery and extraction are other “tools” that should be suggested to the Plutonian.
The problem for Pluto healing is that the Plutonian feels this incredible nuclear explosion within them and they are absolutely afraid to “release it” outwardly for fear they will lose control of it. This is a bottom-line issue for a Plutonian. Will they trust themselves (much less someone else?) to release the garbage inside them? In WHITE WOLF, I illustrate this point time and again. The heroine must take repeated attacks by the Plutonian hero and yet, stand the heat from the fire, and “take it.” Plutonians will do this to see if you can weather their fiercest storm of themselves before they will entrust you with themselves. Their reasoning goes like this: If you can stand their harshest attacks, then they are testing you to see that in case they do go out of control as they release this virulent garbage from within themselves, outward, that you can handle it and them simultaneously. A Plutonian must, above all else, be completely reassured and confident that you can handle their nuclear explosion when it erupts up and out of them. If they don’;t feel you can, they close up, clam up and retreat into their dark Nether world where they allow no one to ever touch or even get close to them to begin the healing process.
Often, Plutonians distrust other human beings so much that it is impossible to use any tools to help them with their inner storm of poisons they carry around with them. In this case, the Cosmos takes over and creates some kind of transformative event, be it an accident, an incarceration (paralyzed within the body which is a shell), imprisonment (in jail or prison), or some other devastating event that will yank them up short, break them in order to get their full, undivided attention. This sounds terribly brutal, but it is sometimes, the only way to stop them from their headlong path of self-destruction (and the destruction of others).
Fortunately, a person with a highly aspected Pluto, can be forewarned about this possibility (ultimately, everything in your natal chart is just that–a possibility–NOT a dyed-in-the-wool reality that it will happen). We all have choices and so does the Plutonian. They don’;t have to attract the worst disaster possibility to them in order to stop and begin to heal themselves. They can do it at any point they desire. As illustrated in WHITE WOLF, the hero finally trusted the heroine enough because he’;d tested time and again, to place himself fully and completely into her hands so that his healing could begin. That possibility is always there for the Plutonian individual..

The History of Astrology — Another View
by Robert Hand
Part IIIWhat did the Egyptians add to Babylonian astrology? We cannot say for certain, but internal evidence indicates the following. The use of a rising degree may or may not have been found in pre-Hellenistic Babylonian astrology. But the Hellenistic writers attributed the use of houses, or signs used as houses to Hermes. For Hermes we should understand a reference to Hellenistic Egyptian sources. It is probable that aspects are also Egyptian but we cannot say for certain. The lots are almost certainly Egyptian as well as most of the systems of rulership. Only the exaltations have a clearly Mesopotamian origin.
At any rate it is quite likely that the entire apparatus of horoscopic astrology was in place by 1 C.E., quite possibly several centuries earlier. One of things that we have found in our studies of the later Greek writers is that they are already dealing with a later era of astrology. They have their “ancients” and they have already begun to misunderstand some of the ancient teachings. One of these writers, Vettius Valens, actually went traveling through Egypt looking for masters of the old traditions, much like modern Americans have gone to India to study astrology and various sacred teachings. While most of the Greek writers seemed to have studied from books, Valens studied with at least a few living teachers of the old traditions. And it is clear from his work that much of what they taught would never have been written down but for Valens. What Happened Next
Whatever may have been the language of Egyptian astrology when it first began to come into being, by 1 C.E. it was Greek. This is not to say that there were no astrology texts written in Coptic, the last form of ancient Egyptian, but no clear reference to any has survived.
All of the Egyptian texts that are referred to in the later literature seem to have been written in Greek. Possibly some were translations from Coptic. The use of Greek had important consequences. Although the Persian empire was a truly cosmopolitan empire with a considerable level of equality among the races that made up the empire, no one language came to predominate. No doubt Persian was used for official purposes, but Babylonian and Egyptian also continued to be used in their own areas in preference to Persian. But when Alexander the Great conquered all of Persia and Egypt, and advanced all the way into northwest India, Greek became the dominant language not only for official purposes, but also for any purpose that involved communicating from one ethnic area to another. The original languages continued to be used for local purposes, such as Aramaic (which completely supplanted Babylonian) and Coptic. But a scholar or traveler could go anywhere from Greece in the west to India in the east and Egypt in the south and be understood. Any idea expressed in Greek could have a similar range of travel.
Even after the Persian revival beginning first with the Parthians and later with the Sassanids (see chronology given earlier), the Bactrian peoples of what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan continued to have Greek speaking rulers until the early centuries C.E. Consequently the Babylonian methods embodied in Egyptian astrology as well as the Egyptian methods themselves could travel into India without difficulty. This accounts for the fact that all of the technical words in Indian astrology whose origins can be found in another language are Greek, not Babylonian, not Coptic, nor earlier Egyptian. What is also interesting is that there appear to be few, if any, technical words in Greek astrology that have their origins in any other language.
Below is a partial list of some of the terms in Hindu astrology that appear to have a Greek origin.1. Zodiacal Signs Sanskrit Greek English Sanskrit Greek English
Kriya Krios Aries Juka Zugos Libra
Tavura Tauros Taurus Kaurpi Skorpios Scorpio
Jituma Didumoi Gemini Taukshika Toxotes Sagittarius

Heli Helios Sun Kona Kronos SaturnAll of the above had Sanskrit equivalents which probably preceded the introduction of the above words into India, and which also eventually completely displaced these words of Hellenic origin. The following are terms for which there are no previous Sanskrit roots and appear to have come completely from Greek. These words have remained standard astrological terms in India to this day.
3. House and Aspect Words Sanskrit Greek English Sanskrit Greek English

Trikona Trigonon Trine Dauradhura Doruphoria Doryphory
Dyuna Dunon Setting Kemadruma Kenodromia Void of C.As the heading at the top of Table 3 indicates, these are all house and aspect words, indicating that this was an area of Hindu astrology on which Hellenistic astrology had great impact.
The question of the debt or lack thereof of Hindu astrology to Hellenistic is an extremely controversial one. Many authors of the Hinduschool would like to deny that there was any at all. This position is a bit hard to support given the above, and also given the very frequent references to the “Yavanas” who were Greeks or more precisely Greek speaking persons of various ethnic extractions.
On the other hand there are Westerners, of whom this author is not one, who believe that Hindu astrology comes entirely from the West (or more precisely Middle East). David Pingree in his study of the Yavanajataka does an extremely thorough job of cataloging the parallels between the astrology of that work and that of the Greeks, and even he is forced to admit that there are many differences. However such differences do not require two different origins. All it requires is a period of isolation between two branches of a tradition after an earlier period of unity, such that the two branches can diverge, and one, the eastern, merge with native traditions already in place. While we do not insist that Hindu astrology is entirely or even principally an offshoot of Hellenistic astrology, it must be said that the required period of isolation did occur which could have caused a single tradition to become two.
After 126 B.C.E. the Parthians, a Persian people, rose up against the Seleucids who succeeded Alexander the Great, and they reconquered most of the old Persian Empire except for the portion near the Mediterranean, and the portion in the northwest of India. The Parthians were extremely hostile to the Greeks (and later the Romans) and effectively cut off communication (or at least cut it down to a trickle) between the main body of Hellenistic peoples toward the West and the Bactrian Greeks in Afghanistan and Pakistan, who in turn remained in power until the early centuries C.E. The Bactrian Greeks eventually converted to Hinduism and their language disappeared. However as of about 200 C.E. they still existed as an identifiable group. These are the Yavanas of the Yavanajataka.
Still later the historian Kay mentions Hindu records from the 4th and 5th Centuries C.E. of a new Sun God cult coming in from the West. Given that Christianity displaced the worship of Sol Invictus, the Unconquered Sun, it is tempting to postulate that Hindu astrology received a second burst of input from a new group of Yavanas fleeing Christian persecution in the West.
The central problem is how much of Hindu astrology is indigenous and how much comes from the West. Other than the few suggestions I have made here, this is not the place to attempt an answer. In any case it is very clear that whatever the Hindus got from the West they did not just take and passively apply. They altered, modified, and quite possibly improved whatever they may have received from the West and combined it with their own native traditions.
There is one other consequence of the Parthian separation. The Persian peoples had always been enthusiastic astrologers. It seems logical to conclude that they must have developed their own traditions from the astrology that they had inherited from the Mesopotamians and the Greeks. Then in 227 C.E. they were overthrown by the Sassanid Persians who would have continued the development of the Persian traditions of astrology.
Unfortunately when the Arabs came, almost all of the literature of the Zoroastrian Sassanids was destroyed. This includes their astrological works. However we do have a strong clue as to what their astrology must have been like. Most of the greatest astrologers in the Arab era were Persians! And the astrology they taught is quite different from both the Hindu and the Greek. It had orbs of aspect, the Great Cycles of Jupiter and Saturn, all of the elaborate systems of planetary interactions such as Refrenation, Frustration, Abscission of Light, Translation of Light and so forth. While Arab era astrology clearly owes a large debt to Hellenistic astrology, it is also clear that in the two or three centuries between the last known Hellenistic astrologers and the first known Arab era ones, something new had come into the stream. This could have been, and probably was the Persian stream of astrology. And Arab era astrology is the immediate ancestor of the Western astrology of today. Our astrology may be in fact the successor to that third stream of ancient astrologies.A Final Note on Zodiacs
We have mentioned previously in this essay that the first Babylonian birthcharts were cast in the sidereal zodiac. Also it has been traditional for Hindu astrologers to use one or another sidereal zodiac. This whole matter is as controversial as the issue of the indebtedness or lack thereof of Hindu astrology to Middle Eastern astrology. But there is not enough space in this essay to go into the matter at this time. In previous writings (in Project Hindsight) we have stated that the zodiac did not seem to be an issue of great import to the ancients. We still hold that position. But at some point in a future introductory essay we will go into that matter in some depth. For the moment it will have to suffice to say that the matter is far from closed in favor of either zodiac.
